Who would have known plugging the vacuum cleaner into a power outlet would cause such havoc? Certainly not Heather Morgan. The last thing on her mind was starting a fire and demolishing her home.

Heather decides to take a few months off from work and begin renovations, a time that becomes precious therapy for her. She also begins counseling sessions that open old wounds and make her face the demons seeping from those memories.
One of the memories is the grandson of her neighbor, Grant Tannebaum. She and Grant were high school friends and each married someone else around the same time. Occasionally, their paths would cross when their respective families visit the lake. Grant now lives with his grandmother. Heather will be seeing much more of him.
Heather’s journey takes her to Utah to the wedding of her younger daughter. On a whim, she asks Grant to be her plus-one. She knows that her ex-husband is now involved with someone, and she doesn’t want to face him alone. All Grant would be is moral support, so she thinks.
Grant suggests they drive the thirteen hours from the lake and Heather agrees. On the trip they reminisce about the past, their grandmothers, and why their marriages didn’t work. They also discover commonalities that draw them closer together.
Following the wedding, Heather, Grant, and Heather’s older daughter and fiancé explore the area’s hiking trails. This allows Heather and her older daughter much needed time together to discuss and mend past hurts. An emergency at the hotel turns their leisurely exploring into a time of sadness and worry.
Once home and after the dust of Utah settles, Heather is left alone with her thoughts, renovations, and counseling sessions. Each session becomes more difficult as layers are peeled off and issues come to the surface. Finally, Heather pieces enough of her lost self together to allow love into her life once again. The first thing she learns is to love herself without changing anything. The second thing she learns is that being open to love and her own happiness is not wrong.
