For centuries couples have been touting their undying devotion to each other more so in the month of February than any other time of the year. To find the origins of this unique day, we need to travel back in time to the Roman festival, Lupercalia...a festival celebrating Spring. Records state the names of all the girls would be put in a box and each boy would draw a name. For the festival, they would be boyfriend and girlfriend...and sometimes even marry during the festival. The Church at that time became involved and made the decision to turn the festival into a Christian celebration honoring St. Valentine.
Who is St. Valentine? Well, St. Valentine was a priest in Rome during 3AD. During this time, Emperor Claudius II banned men from marrying because he felt a married man made a terrible soldier. Enter Father Valentine...because he felt this rule unfair, Valentine arranged secret marriages. When Claudius found out, he tossed the priest in jail and sentenced him to death.
While in jail, our sweet priest, Valentine, fell in love with the jailer's daughter. On the day of his execution, he sent his love a handwritten note and signed it simply, "From Your Valentine." (information obtained from BBC Newsround)
